How to Charge Your Robot Vacuum: A Complete Guide - Narwal Robotics

Charging is a critical step in maintaining the performance and extending the life of your robot vacuum. Proper charging techniques will not only ensure your device always runs efficiently, but will also help prevent some common problems and malfunctions. In this guide, we'll take a closer look at how to charge your robot vacuum, common charging issues and solutions, and factors that affect charging time.

Charging Steps

Setting Up the Charging Dock

  • Choose a suitable location: Place the charging dock on a flat, hard surface with at least 1.5 feet (about 45 cm) of clear space on either side and about 4 feet (about 1.2 meters) of open space in front.

  • Connect the power: Plug the power cord into the back of the charging dock and connect the other end to a wall outlet. Ensure the power indicator light on the dock is on.

  • Install the extension ramp (optional): Attach the extension ramp in front of the dock to help the robot climb into the station more easily.

Preparing the Robot

  • Turn on the robot: If your robot has a power switch, press it briefly to turn on the robot. Ensure the robot is awake and in standby mode.

  • Remove protective film: Check the robot’s surface and battery area, and remove any protective film or cover to ensure the charging contacts are clean and unobstructed.

Docking the Robot

  • Place the robot correctly: Gently push the robot into the charging dock with the camera facing outward. Ensure the charging contacts on the robot align with the charging contacts on the dock.

  • Confirm charging connection: When the robot is properly docked, the charging dock will emit a single beep to indicate a successful connection. The robot will automatically power on and broadcast a message to confirm that charging has started.

Monitoring the Charging Process

  • Check battery status: Open the Narwal App to check the robot’s battery status. The app will display whether the robot is “Charging” or “Fully Charged.”

  • First-time charging: For the first use, it is recommended to fully charge the robot, which typically takes 2-3 hours. Once fully charged, the robot will automatically stop charging to prevent overcharging.

After Charging

  • Start cleaning tasks: Once the robot is fully charged, you can start a cleaning task using the app or the robot’s buttons.

  • Automatic recharging: If the battery runs low during a cleaning task, the robot will automatically return to the charging dock, recharge, and resume cleaning once it has enough power.

  • Daily maintenance: After each cleaning task, return the robot to the charging dock to ensure it is ready for the next use. If the robot will not be used for an extended period, keep it on the charging dock to maintain battery health.

Important Notes

  • Do not move the charging dock: After the map has been created, do not move the charging dock, as the robot may lose its reference point for returning to charge.

  • Ensure sufficient space: Make sure there is about 1 meter of open space in front of the charging dock for the robot to dock properly.

  • Troubleshooting: If you do not hear a beep or the robot does not start charging when docked, check the following:

    • Ensure the power cord is securely connected.

    • Check that the charging contacts are clean and aligned.

    • Confirm the robot is powered on and in standby mode.

Why It Cannot Be Charged and How to Fix It?

Dirty Charging Contacts: Dirt and debris can block the connection between the vacuum cleaner and its charging cradle. When cleaning, switch off the robot vacuum and remove it from the base. Then gently wipe the contacts on the hoover and the base with a soft, clean, dry cloth. With more stubborn dirt, use a cotton swab dipped in topical alcohol; reconnect the contacts once they are dry.

Faulty Charging Dock: A faulty charging base can also be a significant factor in the charging process. Ensure the dock is on a flat surface and not obstructed. Since the base is usually placed on the floor, it is often susceptible to damage from accidental impact by pets and children. Consult the manufacturer's support staff for possible repair or replacement options if there is damage.

Power Connection: Poor circuit contact will result in charging failure. Check that the base is securely plugged into a functioning electrical outlet.

Software Issues: The root cause may be the software if the auto-vac itself and the docking station show no signs of damage or problems. Under some circumstances, a smart vacuum cleaner may not recognize its charging cradle due to a software error. Just a simple reset of the vacuum can resolve charging issues. Refer to your user manual for reset instructions.

Battery Degradation: The battery degrades over time and loses its ability to recharge. It may be time to replace them if your Floor Cleaning Robot is having trouble maintaining power. The battery should normally be replaced every 2 to 3 years, depending on usage and climate. Review the manufacturer's battery life expectancy guide and replacement instructions.

Factors That Affect Charging Time

Battery Type: In comparison to nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, lithium-ion batteries charge faster and last longer.

Battery Capacity: Higher capacity batteries, measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), take longer to charge but provide longer runtime.

Usage Patterns: Intensive and frequent use will drain the battery faster and require more frequent recharging.

Environmental Conditions: Operating in a cluttered or uneven environment causes more strain on the battery.

Charging Habits: Keeping the robot vacuum on its charging dock when not in use prevents deep discharge cycles, which can degrade battery health.
